Do You Know How To Use Your Eye Drops?
You probably didn’t know there was a right way to use eye drops. There’s something uncomfortable about the simple thought of putting a drop in your eye. Well we are here to make things a little easier for you! If you’re helping someone else apply their eye drops, this is the perfect how-to for you too!
Wash your hands before use!
First, and foremost make sure you wash your hands. There’s nothing worse than fixing one eye problem, and then causing another. Avoid an ulcer or an eye infection by following the simple step you’ve known since childhood. Wash your hands, kids!
One drop at a time…
Did you know our eyes can only absorb so much at once? Just like a sponge can only hold so much liquid, your eye can only absorb one eye drop at once. If you’re using multiple eye drops, make sure to give your eye at least 5 minutes before you apply the next eye drop. Otherwise, your eye is just going to flush out what it can’t absorb. Let’s not waste those eye drops.
Applying the Eye Drop. You can do this!
1. Create a pocket.
With your non-dominant hand, use your index finger; just below your eye lash line on the lower eye lid, pull the skin down. This will create a little pocket under your eyeball in your lower eye lid for you to apply the drop.
2. Look up.
Tilt your head back slightly and look up at the ceiling.
3. Drop it!
Then with your dominant hand, use your index finger and thumb to hold the bottle and flip the dropper down towards your eyeball.
Continue to look up and gently squeeze the bottle until you see or feel a little drop come down. Remember, some eye drop prescriptions are thicker than others. Once you learn if your eye drop is a thick one or a watery one, you will know how easily the drop can be squeezed out of the bottle.
4. Grab a clean tissue!
Always have a clean tissue at-hand so you can catch anything that runs down. It’s best if you close your eye and press on the inner corner of your eye for a few seconds after applying the drop. This will help the drop from being flushed out. Leave your eyes closed for a few seconds and allow the drop to be absorbed.
Follow your eye drop instructions.
Make sure you know which eye you will use the drops in (if not both), and that you understand how many times a day you will need to use them. It is always best to spread out the dosage throughout the day and try to keep it consistent. Don’t hesitate to call your doctor and ask for clarification!
Remember: it will not always be perfect, and your eye will not always absorb 100% of the eye drop. The goal is to make sure that your eye catches as much as possible and that you don’t over or under apply the eye drop. Don’t let those drops go to waste. Using eye drops is not easy for everyone but following your doctor’s instructions for prescribed medication could bring you much relief.
