Laser Vision Correction

The Time is Right for the iLASIK Procedure

Now that the iLASIK Procedure is available, there’s really no reason to put off having laser vision correction. Doctors have been performing laser vision correction procedures for over a decade and 31.4 million procedures have been performed worldwide to date, making it the most common elective vision procedure in the U.S. In fact, all branches of the U.S. military and NASA recently allowed the treatment of LASIK for their servicemen and women thanks to studies using iLASIK Technology.

Qualifications

The reality is that the majority of people who meet the age and general health requirements are in fact good candidates for the iLASIK Procedure. There are some conditions that exclude certain patients, but whether you have nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, there’s a good chance you can still have the iLASIK Procedure.

If you meet the basic criteria below, you should find an iLASIK surgeon and have a personal consultation.

  1. You are at least 21 years old
  2. You are in good general health
  3. You have had a stable vision prescription for at least one year
  4. You have no existing eye disease

The Lasik Process

Set up your FREE Screening Appointment.

This one’s on us! During this screening exam, we will take some basic measurements, check for cornea thickness, and see if your eye is healthy enough to sustain a Lasik procedure. Plan to be in our office for at least an hour.

This time, we will cross our T’s and dot our I’s. The first step in the iLASIK Procedure is to perform a series of tests (including the use of our WaveScan Technology) to determine the individual characteristics of your vision. We will take multiple tests using this technology to double check, triple check, and quadruple check that your eyes are in good condition for a Lasik procedure. The WaveScan System creates a 3-D map of the unique imperfections of your eyes. Then our Advanced CustomVue treatment applies the digital information from that map to design a custom treatment for each of your eyes. If you decide that Lasik is for you, we will go over payment options and give you all the information you need prior to surgery on this day. Plan to be here for about an hour and a half. Most insurances are accepted.

Find freedom and start living! LASIK is a simple 2-step process.

Creating the Flap

The iLASIK procedure exclusively uses an advanced technology called the IntraLase Method. The IntraLase method is a 100% blade-free approach to creating your LASIK flap—the thin flap of tissue that the doctor folds back in order to perform your iLASIK procedure. With the Intralase Method, tiny pulses of laser light, a quadrillionth of a second each, pass harmlessly through the outer portion of your cornea and form a uniform layer of microscopic bubbles just beneath the surface of your eye. The exact dimensions of this layer of bubbles are determined by your doctor based on what’s best for your eye and are computer controlled for maximum precision.

Reshaping your Cornea

Dr. Watkins can then lift the flap to perform your Lasik treatment. It’s quick and painless, and we’ll make sure you’re extra warm and comfortable!

Healing & Recovery

When Lasik is complete, the flap created by the Intralase Method can now uniquely “lock” back into place, and instantly begins to heal the moment you leave the surgery room. Recovery time varies, but Dr. Watkins will continue to follow up with you until he sees that you’re feeling confident with your new vision.

The Technology

Current FDA-approved laser vision correction methods, such as LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis), have a higher predictability of the final result with a lower incidence of complications. Additionally, older techniques typically involved manually performed incisions rather than automated lasers for correction. The procedure uses an ultra-fast iFS®Femtosecond Laser, built from a legacy of innovative IntraLase® Technology. The femtosecond laser creates a thin flap customized to your unique eye shape, to prepare the cornea for treatment. Based on the digital information from your personalized eye map, an ultra-precise STAR S4 IR® Excimer Laser is used to gently reshape the cornea to the desired curvature. When the flap is put back into place, you’re done! Most people begin experiencing clearer vision right after surgery and are at a full 20/20 the following day. Dr. Watkins will see you the next day to check on your recovery and ensure proper healing.
